NVOLVE is CSCNL’s newcomer volunteering initiative, designed to build connection, confidence, and community belonging. By creating inclusive, meaningful volunteer opportunities, it strengthens both individuals and organizations across Newfoundland and Labrador.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 19–25, 2026) and the theme “Ignite Volunteerism,” it is also a moment to reflect on how volunteerism continues to evolve across Newfoundland and Labrador.
At the Community Sector Council NL (CSCNL), this evolution is taking shape through NVOLVE — Newcomer Volunteering, a growing initiative that is redefining how individuals connect, contribute, and belong through volunteer experiences.

A New Approach to Volunteer Engagement
NVOLVE was designed in response to a critical question: How can volunteerism better reflect the realities, strengths, and aspirations of newcomers to our province? Rather than viewing volunteering solely as a pathway to employment, NVOLVE positions it as a foundation for connection, confidence, and community participation.
Through this approach, volunteering becomes:
- A space to build meaningful relationships
- A way to navigate new environments with support
- An entry point into civic life and community belonging
This aligns strongly with the spirit of Volunteer Week, where each act of volunteering contributes to stronger, more connected communities across the province.
What NVOLVE Delivers
NVOLVE is more than a matching program. It is a structured, inclusive model that supports both individuals and organizations.
- Skill-Building and Confidence Development – Participants engage in workshops and guided learning that strengthen transferable skills, communication, and readiness for community engagement.
- Meaningful Volunteer Placements – Newcomers are connected with organizations across Newfoundland and Labrador in roles that are purposeful, skill-aligned, as well as flexible and accessible. These placements are designed to create real experiences, not just participation.
- Navigation and Support – From understanding volunteer expectations to identifying the right opportunities, NVOLVE provides practical guidance every step of the way, ensuring that participation is informed and empowering.
- Inclusive Program Design – Using an inclusive, equity-informed approach, NVOLVE ensures that opportunities reflect diverse lived experiences and remove common barriers to participation.
Strengthening Organizations and Communities
NVOLVE also supports community organizations by helping them:
- Access a diverse and motivated volunteer base
- Design inclusive and well-structured roles
- Strengthen their capacity to engage newcomers meaningfully
This is particularly important as Newfoundland and Labrador continues to grow and diversify. Volunteerism plays a key role in ensuring that communities remain welcoming, resilient, and connected.
Volunteerism as Belonging
Across the province, more than 210,000 individuals contribute their time through volunteering each year, forming the backbone of community life.
NVOLVE builds on this strong foundation by ensuring that newcomers are not only included, but actively shaping that future.
Through shared experiences, relationships, and contributions, volunteering becomes more than an activity. It becomes:
- A pathway to belonging
- A bridge between communities
- A reflection of the values that define Newfoundland and Labrador
During Volunteer Week, and throughout the year, this work continues to grow, helping ensure that volunteerism in Newfoundland and Labrador is not only celebrated, but continuously reimagined to reflect the communities it serves.
